December 05, 1995

The Scripps Research Institute, The Committee Lecture Hall

Background:

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1948, Dr. Ian Jardine graduated from the University of Glasgow with a B.S in Chemistry in 1970, obtaining his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry three years later. Following a four year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Pharmacology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Jardin was honored with a number of professorships at Purdue University, the Mayo Clinic, and the Mayo Medical School. In July of 1988, Dr. Jardin was appointed Director of Analytical Biochemistry at Finnigan MAT, and was named Director of Marketing in December 1991. He is author and co-author of over 60 research papers.

Abstract:

Dr. Jardine will introduce Finnigan's LCQ ion-trap mass spectrometer consisting of an electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source, coupled to a ion-trap mass analyzer. He will demonstrate the basic performance of the system including examples of the use of MSn for the structural elucidation of carbohydrates, drug metabolites, and minor components in complex mixtures.
